Autoshop isn’t just about working on cars; it’s about being able to work on “hands-on” projects, while enjoying it at the same time! Many students are currently doing body work, changing their engines, helping others, and preparing for paint jobs. I recently had the chance to talk with Mr. Gage, the Autoshop/Welding teacher, and ask him questions about his class.
Q: Do you think the mechanics you’re teaching have helped students so far?
A: “Yes, they’ve helped students understand the properties of a work ethic.”
Q: What do you expect your students to learn?
A: “I would like the students to have an opportunity to learn what they want to learn.”
Q: What were your expectations on becoming an Autoshop/Welding teacher? Have you reached them?
A: “My expectations were to help students gain an understanding of a job. I haven’t reached my goals yet, but I’m getting more and more cooperation from students and they’re beginning to show an interest.”
Here are some comments on what students think of Autoshop:
“This is probably the only class I look forward to. Mr. Gage helps me whenever I ask him anything.” - Kyle Whitley
“Autoshop is a real joy to have, because it gives me time to get away from English and Math.”- Angel Netherlin
“It’s better than all my other classes.”- Tyler Tallant
“This is my favorite class because I can work on cars.”- Tyler Blevins
“Remarkable.”- Chris Veckey
“Auto/Welding is my favorite class because I can work on whatever I want.”- Chad Coyle

Engineering isn’t only about math and science; it also requires creativity, analytical thinking and being able to communicate. Engineering has specialization, ranging from Aerospace engineering to Petroleum engineering. Engineers design, construct and find solutions to practical problems. Entry level jobs for engineers require a bachelor’s degree, although some may require a graduate degree. Also, college graduates with a degree in a natural science or mathematics may qualify for an engineering job.
Continuing education is key in being an engineer to keep up to date with technology. Employment for engineers is expected to grow faster than most other occupations in the next decade. Engineers have one of the the highest starting salaries of all graduates. Salaries range from $43,070 to $166,400, depending on specialization. Beginning engineers work under supervision from experienced engineers.
They usually work in office buildings, laboratories, industrial plants or outside at construction sites. If you are interested in traveling, then engineering might appeal to you because engineers not only work in the United States but abroad as well. ![]()
There was a family: a loving mother, a father, and their son who loved his mother very much. They were a normal family. Nothing ever went wrong, until one day, when the mother found out that the father wasn’t being truthful with her. They argued and argued for hours. The son was sound asleep. Then, the father grew tired of the mother’s words so he hit the mother repeatedly until she wasn’t moving anymore. The father was scared and he didn’t know what to do. After staring at the body for a few minutes, he heard footsteps. The father quickly put the body in the closet when his son came out of his bedroom.
“Where is mommy?” the son asked.
“Son, mommy had to go somewhere far away.
She didn’t have time to say goodbye.” The father answered.
“Oh…Okay! I can’t wait for mommy to come home!”
Months passed. The father was wondering why the son hasn’t asked for his mommy. The father didn’t say anything to the son. More months passed. He just started the 3rd grade. He hadn’t asked about his mother in three years. So, one day…..
“You must be lonely without your mommy around?”
“Not really,”
“What do you mean?” the father asked surprised.
“Mommy is standing right there watching me,”
“What do you mean? Son, mommy is…?”
“Daddy? Mommy’s right there.”
His face pale like a ghost he slowly turns his head around and finds the mother standing right behind him with nothing but a grin on her face.

It became the fifth film to make more than one billion worldwide. Avatar was produced by James Cameron, who also created the films like Titanic and Terminator 2. Avatar takes place in the future when Jake Sully, a disabled marine, goes to Pandora, an Earth-like moon. The atmosphere on the planet is not suitable for humans so scientists have created avatars that are matched and controlled by the human operator.
These avatars are human hybrids of the native people. Jake is a last minute replacement for his twin brother who died. There is also a mining operation on the planet searching for a valuable mineral. Jake must then gain the natives trust, so he learns the language and how they live. The scientists want to learn about the environment of the planet, yet the mining company wants to do anything they can to get their hands on the mineral. The film is also available in 3D.
It was a great experience and is worth the extra dollars. The storyline along with the 3D puts you inside Pandora. This movie is full of action and emotion. It is one of the best movies in theaters right now and I recommend you watch it, hands down.

In the movie, Harry Potter goes back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his 6th year of training. There he learns more about Lord Voldemort’s dark and violent past. Harry suspects something going on at the school and starts to investigate, and Dumbledore tries to ensure that Harry is ready for the return of the Dark Lord.
I thought the beginning of the movie was a little confusing, but for the most part I liked it. There was a lot of romance and infatuation going on, so it was kind of cute to see all of the characters. I didn’t think it was the best out of the 6 films based on the novels by J.K. Rowling, but it was still pretty good.
I would recommend watching it if you’re into Harry Potter. This film is rated PG.

Ajo High School Basketball |

Not only was 2010 the start of a new semester for all the students and teachers here at Ajo High School, but it was also the start of the second half of the season for our Raiders’ basketball team. Because of the two-week break, the games started off a little rough. |
|
|
Lady Raiders T.O. at home, Tuesday, January 5. It’s been their first win of the season. Both teams played tough throughout the game showing teamwork and effort with a positive attitude. The final score was Ajo, 39 and T.O. 26. Thursday, January 7 was a lost for Ajo. They played against California’s San Pasqual Boys basketball team, here at home. The final score was Ajo, 31 and San Pasqual, 63. Ajo played against their long-time rival Gila Bend Friday, January 8. Both crowds were cheering for their team throughout the whole game. The game was fast paced for the most part, until in the end Ajo had too many fouls. Even though the boys lost by 17, they showed teamwork and effort. The final score was Ajo, 30 and Gila Bend, 47. |
Raiders The week started off with a game against T.O. on Tuesday, January 5. The ladies played defensively, but still lost with a score of 34-8. On Thursday, January 7, the ladies faced San Pasquel warriors. They were up against a strong offense, with two players that could shoot from the three-point line all day long. Though they struggled, they still played well. The final score was San Pasquel-39, and Ajo-16. To end the week, the Raiders’ headed up highway 85 to play our rivals, the Gila Bend Gila Monsters. Unfortunately, the ladies lost. Right now, the Lady Monsters are number one in 1A, so they were literally up against the best. The final score was 72-14. This past Tuesday, our ladies faced ASDB away. They lost 20-40. |

Chris Brown
I’m sure you have seen this fellow around school, his name is Chris Brown and he’s a senior this year. I recently interviewed him to talk about some of his interests and goals. His hobbies are playing Call of Duty and hanging out with his girlfriend Savannah McCasland. He enjoys playing basketball and baseball. This year was also his first year playing on the high school Varsity basketball team, and he is one of the team’s captains.
When I asked him what he dreamed of becoming as a child, he said, “Becoming the first African American president- Obama beat me!” So, he might not become the first African American president, but he plans on moving to Phoenix after graduation, but isn’t so clear on what he is going to do. His favorite things about high school are his friends and basketball. Chris had some great advice for underclassmen. He said, “Don’t waste time by messing around. Get all of your work done. Don’t try to get everything done your last year.”

Leonela Vazquez
Another senior I had the chance to interview was Leonela Vazquez. Her hobbies include hanging out with friends, being on the computer, shopping, and listening to music. She didn’t join any sports during high school, but does enjoy watching baseball. Leonela plans becoming Track and Field manager this coming spring. She is Student Council Social Chair and a member of National Honor Society.
Leonela dreamed of becoming an elementary teacher as a child. After high school, she plans on attending Pima Community College in Tucson, while working. Her favorite thing about high school is her friends, because “they motivate me to come to school.”
Leonela’s advice for underclassmen is “don’t mess around and don’t wait until the last minute to do your work.”
There has been a lot of debate about 2010, such as, would you say “two thousand ten’, or ‘twenty ten’, or would it even be ‘o-ten’? And some discussions have remained the same, for example: New Years’ resolutions. With every year, a new set of average and interesting New Years’ resolutions is created. Some may include the usual: Trying to avoid old bad habits, maybe even lose a little weight, or treading cautiously with money. Others may be a little more abstract. Here are some of the weirdest New Years’ resolutions we found.
Yes, these resolutions definitely take the cake compared to most of ours, but if you’re looking for a way to spice up your 2010, try out some of these.

It’s a common question and everybody seems to have an opinion; can guys and girls really be just friends?
Depending on whom you ask you get a variety of answers. In theory there is no good reason that guys and girls can’t be friends but in reality it really depends on the people involved. Some people can pull off opposite sex friendships and some people can’t.
While there are situations where physical attraction is a factor it is rarely so overwhelming that it makes a friendship impossible. When physical attraction or lust does get in the way of being friends it isn’t always the guy who is struggling with those feelings. Yes, girls do lust after guys as much as guys lust after girls.
There is no right or wrong answer to a question like this; can guys and girls really be just friends? It’s up to you if you only want to be friends or move things forward. Some guys like to hang out with girls to escape their guy friends. Some girls hang out with guys because they want to escape drama and gossiping but this only an opinion, not fact. ![]()
Tardiness is seen as one of the biggest problems at Ajo High School, or so says our teachers and administration. Whenever a student walks into class tardy, you always hear the same question: “Why are you late??” Some teachers ask more forcefully than others, but that’s not the point! The point is, why ARE students always late?
Tardiness is the result of bathroom breaks, mingling, boyfriend/girlfriend time, student/teacher conversations, and thirstiness. Though most of these are avoidable, the biggest problem is that students don’t feel the need to hurry between classes. The five-minute break between all of our hour-long classes is the only time that students have for themselves during the school day, other than lunch, of course.
“After lunch I’m late a lot”, says senior Luz Flores. “I can’t help it! I like to take my time eating, and by the time I get home for lunch, I only have five minutes to eat and get back to school!” When I asked her for reasons why she is late other than lunch, she replied, “Sometimes you need to get to your locker, and the locker room might be crowded, or I might mess up my combination a few times. Or maybe I have to go to the restroom, or I want a drink. Maybe I need to talk to Mr. McGoldrick. Things happen!”
The school seems to be cracking down these days on tardiness and the students’ ability to leave class. Punishment for tardiness is lunch detention, and many students don’t think it’s fair to receive detention after only being late a few times and for certain reasons. Benny Pino is a student who thinks he receives detention very easily. “The other day, Dr. Painter and Mr. McGoldrick told me that I had twelve detentions, and I didn’t even know how I got them! I just wish the teachers would let me know when I get detention, so that way I don’t have to be surprised by the principal with them.
”So is tardiness avoidable? Yes. Will all of the students at Ajo High School go through the measure to avoid them? Most likely, no. And for those students, I have collected the ‘Top Fifteen Excuses for Being Late to Class’. Use them wisely.
